What is Guayusa Tea?
Guayusa (why-you-sa) tea is brewed from the leaves of the Guayusa plant. Dried and brewed in the purest water, it is revered by natural healers of its Amazonian native regions and used as a medicinal herb to treat many health ailments.
It is described as a mild tea, with a unique combination of stimulants that make it the perfect beverage of choice for waking up every morning. Guayusa tea is naturally caffeinated, and in fact has more caffeine than most other teas at about 90 mg per 8 ounces. Its caffeine is slowly released into the blood stream, introducing it gradually rather than in the sudden burst that many experience with their caffeinated beverages.
Native to the upper Amazon regions of Peru, Columbia and especially Ecuador, where it is primarily cultivated.
Treasured for its unique balance of caffeine, antioxidants, vitamins and amino acids which awaken the mind and fortify the body.
Closely related to its cousin, Yerba Mate, though it lacks the latter’s bitter taste.
Considered an “herbal tea” because it is made from Ilex guayusa rather than the traditional tea plant, Camellia sinensis.
For millennia, Guayusa has been enjoyed by Amazonian and Ecuadorian indigenous people for the energy, vitality and mental clarity it provides. Yet, until recently, this amazing plant has escaped the attention of most Americans.
As a tonic, Guayusa has been drunk to provide natural remedies to many common ailments such as headaches and abdominal pain. It is also considered a potent aphrodisiac, as well as a dream enhancer and lucid dream producer in certain shamanistic cultures.
